Implementing sound test automation systems is a must-have thing these days for any business. Not only does it marginally cut the company expenses, but it’s also faster and much more reliable than manual testing.

Implementing Test Automation Solutions (Outdated Approach)
Implementing test automation solutions for more than three years, I’ve experienced how fast technology evolves.
The changes that technology undergoes are sudden and unprecedented, and it’s not rare for an organization to go out of business just because it couldn’t evolve with technology. Unfortunately, working in the industry as a test automation architect, I’ve noticed that most organizations are still sticking to the old and outdated approach of implementing the manual testing solution, the flaws of which far outweigh the benefits.
Let’s see the pros and cons of following this approach:
Pros
More Practical: It’s helpful to detect the errors that might’ve been left unchecked during manual testing.
Cost-effective: Unlike manual testing, it’s far easier to test software
using automation.
Saves Time: With advanced algorithms in place, automated testing is
faster than ever. It allows the organization to spend less time on testing. The company can invest this time and resources to build and implement advanced measures for the automation software.
Detailed Reports: Automated testing provides detailed reports and even
compiles them whenever needed. Such tasks would’ve never been this
undemanding without automation testing.
Cons
Expensive: Outdated approach to automated web and mobile test cases is
costly compared to the newer one.
Unreliable: Traditional approach included a lot of manual work,
producing inconsistent and less accurate results.
Slower Release Cycles: Since the traditional process is primarily
manual, it demands a tedious procedure to follow. Even so, the reliability
remains questionable, as mentioned above.
Multiple Dependencies: Multiple dependencies can directly impact the
software’s overall performance; automation tools are no different.
Furthermore, outdated dependencies hamper the program’s performance
even more.
Implementing Test Automation Solutions (Modern Approach)
The modern approach of implementing test automation involves less clutter and enables faster release cycles. The process is much more refined and easier to understand and follow, bringing dramatic changes in the overall automation system.
Test case management is one of the crucial building blocks of modern test automation. Here are the qualities that a good test case management tool should have:
- Should Fit in the Project’s Budget
Look for a tool that suits your budget. Choosing a commercial tool that enables you to pay for only the features you’ll need is the option to go for. Many times, we end up burning money on the wrong tool.
- Should be Easy to Adopt
Research beforehand about the tool before implementing it in your systems. There’s no point using a tool with a steep learning curve, and this is something you should always consider before adopting a test case management tool.
- Should Assist the User to Make Informed Decisions
The UI of the tool should guide the user to make more informed decisions, suggesting the best-optimized solutions possible. Not only does it make learning the software more straightforward, but it also provides the user with a friendly and comfortable environment. Having links to detailed documentation or videos within the software is
always a bonus.
- Integration Support
Integration support comes in handy for test case management tools. Good integration support enables users to directly link bugs to test case runs, providing advanced traceability and enabling a hassle-free workflow.
